Outpatients receiving treatment in TBRHSC’s Cancer Centre will soon be able to access spiritual care with the help of dedicated and supportive volunteers.

Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) is looking to address the spiritual needs of patients receiving care at the Cancer Centre through the development of a Spiritual Care volunteer position.

“This volunteer position is being created to address the spiritual needs of outpatients receiving treatment in our Cancer Centre, which is an area that has required spiritual care supports for some time now,” explains Lisa Laitinen-Egbuchulam, Spiritual Care Provider, TBRHSC. “Currently, patients of the cancer centre are already able to receive psychosocial support through the Supportive Care department and now Spiritual Care will be available for them as well. We know how difficult dealing with cancer can be, so the Spiritual Care Volunteer will be able to provide much-needed emotional support and address any spiritual and/or religious questions or concerns patients may have. ”

The Spiritual Care Volunteer will work in a Multifaith capacity, supporting the particular spiritual and religious beliefs identified by each patient.
