National Nursing Week Spotlight: Erika Whatley

Erika Whatley’s journey in nursing began here, working as a unit care aide while completing a diploma in Practical Nursing. In 2019, she graduated as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) and developed a passion for surgical nursing. However, she felt a strong drive to continue advancing in her career.

Celebrating Cardiovascular Perfusionists

Cardiovascular perfusionists play a vital and intricate role as integral members of the interprofessional operating room team, working seamlessly alongside cardiac surgeons and anesthesiologists to ensure optimal patient outcomes during complex surgical procedures. Their responsibilities include the management and operation of sophisticated technologies such as the heart-lung machine, which is crucial for conducting cardiopulmonary bypass — a process that temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs during surgery.

Bianca Zussino is a third-year biology and neuroscience student at Lakehead University with aspirations to pursue a career in medicine. In addition to her academic studies, she is currently a neurogastroenterology research intern with Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
