Statement on the death of David Ringius

David Ringius - first chair of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre

The following statement was issued by Nadine Doucette, Chair of the Board of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, upon the death of David Ringius, first chair of the amalgamated Thunder Bay Regional Hospital in 1995.

As Chair of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, I want to offer my condolences to the family of Dave Ringius who passed away February 14.

Dave was the first Chair of the merged Thunder Bay Regional Hospital in 1995.

In his role as President of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce he had advocated for a merger of the McKellar and Port Arthur General Hospitals to form one, stronger hospital to serve Thunder Bay and the region. As a result of this advocacy, he was asked to join the Amalgamation Team Committee that worked on the merger. When that work was successfully completed, the Amalgamation Team elected him as the first chair of the merged hospital.

Another former chair and original member of the merged Board Keith Jobbit remembers Dave as a gung ho person who once he committed to a project was a tireless advocate for it and saw it through to its completion.

It is the work of people like Dave and the other pioneers of the merged hospital that put us on the path that has made us one of the leading Academic Health Centres in Ontario.

We thank him for his contribution and mourn his passing.
