Retire Well by Embracing Change: Mapping Your Retirement Road
by Sarah Hyett
Do you have a financial plan for retirement? Many Canadians do not; according to a survey, 37% of Canadians haven’t even thought of retirement. On top of that, 53% of Canadians are not sure if they are saving enough for retirement. A lack of retirement planning may lead to stress and hardship on the road to retirement, which could impact your overall wellbeing.
Larry Lovis, a financial planner for over 32 years, encourages everyone – regardless of age – to think about financial planning for retirement. “The earlier the better. Within 10-15 years of retirement you should be getting very serious about a plan,” Lovis says. “Retirees are likely going to live a very long time and running out of money is their biggest risk.” Lovis entered the financial industry at the young age of 22. He has moved through dramatic changes in the economy and his field of financial planning. His accumulated wisdom can be found in his book Mapping Your Retirement Road: A No-Nonsense Guide to a Financially Better Life. Along with this resource Lovis points to a professional, trusted financial planning advisory team as the key resource for people who need help planning their retirement. “This is not something you should be tackling yourself…life gets in the way,” he says.
Lovis points to three key factors that people need to consider when planning for retirement:
- What are your goals for the future?
- What do you want retirement to look and feel like?
- Do you have a contingency plan for health care costs?
The sooner you start your financial planning for the retirement the better! If you’re interested in learning about planning for retirement, Larry Lovis will be presenting at the Healthy Get-Together Speaker Series, hosted by Prevention and Screening Services at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. In his session, Retire Well by Embracing Change, Lovis will be discussing critical issues that individuals need to address in order to retire well, particularly relating to a financially healthy life and he will cover key information and strategies for anyone looking to make their money last in retirement.
This talk may be of interest to individuals who are currently retired, approaching retirement or just beginning of their career. Join Lovis on Wednesday December 5th from 7:00-8:00 pm in Auditorium A at the Hospital. The event is free, open to everyone, and parking passes are available.
