Hospital postponing non-essential services and elective surgeries

March 18, 2020

As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves, clinical demand prioritization of clinical services is essential. Following recommendations of the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, our Hospital will cancel elective surgeries and other non-essential services, including most outpatient services as of March 20, 2020 at 3:30 pm.

COVID-19 Assessment Centre to enhance safety

The Assessment Centre is located on-site outside of the Hospital’s Emergency Department. Because the Assessment Centre is a separate space, it reduces the risk of infection spread and eases pressure on the Emergency Department.

Notice of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci Outbreak

Thunder Bay Regional Health Science is currently experiencing an outbreak of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) on inpatient unit 2A. As a precautionary measure, visitors will not be permitted on unit 2A during the VRE outbreak unless they have been identified as a patient’s designated Care Partner. Patients determine who their Care Partners are. They support and participate in the care of the patient and are always welcome at our Hospital.

Emergency Department Experiencing High Volumes

“All patients in the Emergency Department are triaged and treated according to the urgency of their needs,” explained Dr. Peter Voros, Executive Vice President of In-Patient Care Programs at the Hospital. “This means that those who need care the most receive it sooner, while those with less-urgent needs may wait longer. We request the patience and understanding of those who visit the Emergency Department during this time.”

Code Orange at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre

A Code Orange (External Disaster) Stage I was activated at our Hospital today at approximately 12:30 this afternoon. The Code Orange triggers a response by our Hospital to prepare for high volumes of patients arriving to the Emergency Department. The response by staff and physicians was swift, calm and highly organized. All are to be commended for their expertise and professionalism. As the external situation evolved, the number of patients expected to require Emergency care was significantly reduced and the Code Orange was cleared at 1:00 pm.

Hospital’s President and CEO and CEO of the Health Research Institute Announces Planned Retirement

Jean Bartkowiak, President & CEO of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and CEO of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute, plans to retire at the end of his contract in January, 2021.
