Urgent Care from the Comfort of Home: Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre offers Virtual Emergency Department

January 4, 2021

The Virtual Emergency Department (ED) offers same-day virtual assessments with emergency department physicians. The program is available to people living in Thunder Bay and the surrounding area who are older than 17 years of age, have a non-life-threatening medical issue, and either don’t have a primary care provider or are unable to obtain timely access to one.

First COVID-19 vaccine administered in Northwestern Ontario

Today, Northwestern Ontario’s first COVID-19 vaccines were administered at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. The first person to receive the vaccine in Thunder Bay is Sean Bolton, a dedicated Personal Support Worker at Hogarth Riverview Manor.

The health and safety of all staff, professional staff, patients, care partners and the community is our utmost priority. In response to the rise in COVID-19 cases in Ontario, travel restrictions will be reinstated at our Hospital. Effective Tuesday, October 6th, travel outside of Northern Ontario (Parry Sound to the Manitoba border) in the past seven days will result in a failed entrance screening.

Located in Confederation College’s Sibley Hall Residence Activity Room, the alternative COVID-19 Assessment Centre site improves access to COVID-19 testing for students, parents and families, teachers and other school personnel including bus drivers. The collaborative approach to establishing this centre is in response to the exceptionally high demand for testing that has arisen across the province since students returned to school.
