Hospital increasing non-essential surgical and procedural activity

Beginning on June 1, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre will begin to increase non-essential surgical and procedural activity, including elective surgeries, that had been previously ramped down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients who were impacted by service cancellations will be contacted directly by their physicians or the Hospital for rescheduling. Patience is appreciated as the Hospital works diligently to address the backlog created by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the meantime, those who require urgent health care will always have access to it at our Hospital.

This extends to people who may have been previously identified as care partners in recent weeks.

Hospital postponing non-essential services and elective surgeries

As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves, clinical demand prioritization of clinical services is essential. Following recommendations of the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, our Hospital will cancel elective surgeries and other non-essential services, including most outpatient services as of March 20, 2020 at 3:30 pm.

COVID-19 Assessment Centre to enhance safety

The Assessment Centre is located on-site outside of the Hospital’s Emergency Department. Because the Assessment Centre is a separate space, it reduces the risk of infection spread and eases pressure on the Emergency Department.

Notice of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci Outbreak

Thunder Bay Regional Health Science is currently experiencing an outbreak of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) on inpatient unit 2A. As a precautionary measure, visitors will not be permitted on unit 2A during the VRE outbreak unless they have been identified as a patient’s designated Care Partner. Patients determine who their Care Partners are. They support and participate in the care of the patient and are always welcome at our Hospital.
