Travel restrictions reinstated at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for the protection of all

The health and safety of all staff, professional staff, patients, care partners and the community is our utmost priority. In response to the rise in COVID-19 cases in Ontario, travel restrictions will be reinstated at our Hospital. Effective Tuesday, October 6th, travel outside of Northern Ontario (Parry Sound to the Manitoba border) in the past seven days will result in a failed entrance screening.

Located in Confederation College’s Sibley Hall Residence Activity Room, the alternative COVID-19 Assessment Centre site improves access to COVID-19 testing for students, parents and families, teachers and other school personnel including bus drivers. The collaborative approach to establishing this centre is in response to the exceptionally high demand for testing that has arisen across the province since students returned to school.

Earlier today, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre welcomed a site visit from the Honourable Greg Rickford, Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines, Minister of Indigenous Affairs and MPP for Kenora—Rainy River. Minister Rickford visited to applaud our Hospital’s advancements in comprehensive cardiovascular care and reaffirm the Government of Ontario’s commitment to establish a full cardiovascular surgery program for the patients of Northwestern Ontario.

Hospital’s COVID-19 Assessment Centre takes on Appointment Scheduling for Local Testing

Beginning August 10th, the Hospital will assume the testing appointments scheduling duties from the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) and will be the main contact for booking COVID-19 testing appointments in the community.

Tomorrow, July 23, 2020, the dedicated COVID-19 Care Unit at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre will close. “This is a milestone transition in our COVID-19 pandemic response, and highlights our community’s success in terms of avoiding an influx of positive cases in our Hospital,” said Dr. Steward Kennedy, Incident Manager.

Care Partners welcome back

“We are pleased to share that, beginning this week, Care Partners will be welcomed back to our Hospital, along with Essential Care Partners,” said Dr. Stewart Kennedy, Incident Manager for the Hospital’s COVID-19 response. “Although necessary for everyone’s protection, the restrictions have been difficult for patients and families. Thanks to the diligence of our community members, and the introduction of mandatory masks, we are now able to ease restrictions.”
