Long-Time Medical Oncologist Announces Retirement

Dr. Dimitrios Vergidis, MD, FRCPC

Dr. Dimitrios Vergidis, MD, FRCPC, has announced his retirement from the Regional Cancer Program on October 31, 2016.  After 25 years of service, Dr. Vergidis has made a significant contribution to Exceptional Cancer Care in Northwestern Ontario.  Areas of success for Dr. Vergidis were the development of networks of providers to offer care close to home for the many patients with acute leukemia and for all regional patients having most of their care in Thunder Bay before and after autologous stem cell transplantation for high risk hematologic malignancies.

Among his many accomplishments during his tenure as Chief of Oncology, Dr. Vergidis led the integration of the Cancer Centre into the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre as well as the successful implementation of a comprehensive Electronic Medical Record for the Cancer Program.

Recruitment of Medical Oncologists to the Regional Cancer Program is currently underway and the selection committee is focused on strong clinical skills and a Patient Centered philosophy of care.

We wish to extend our sincerest gratitude to Dr. Vergidis for 25 years of exceptional cancer care, and wish him all the best in the next chapter of his life.
