Today Volunteers and Patient Family Advisors were formally recognized for their dedication and service. Volunteers and Patient Family Advisors have an immense impact on Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.

Between the two organizations, there are over 1,000 individual volunteers. Volunteers are involved in many ways including greeting the public, friendly patient support, and fundraising special events like the Elekta Bachelors for Hope Charity Auction. In addition, both organizations are governed by volunteer Boards of Directors that provide strategic direction for the organizations, something essential to providing the best care possible for patients and families. Our Patient Family Advisors volunteer as partners on committees throughout the organization.

“Volunteers are the backbone of any organization,” says Andrée Robichaud, President and CEO, TBRHSC and Acting CEO, Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute. “I couldn’t imagine what our organization would be like without them. They are an essential link to the community and we value what they do to make the patient experience better.”

“Volunteers represent thousands of hours of service at the Health Sciences Centre and in our region each year,” says Liz Straiton, Manager, Volunteer Services. “To say we couldn’t do it without them would be an understatement. They remind us of just how supportive our community is when it comes to better healthcare for all of us.”

National Volunteer Week (April 12 – 18) is an opportunity to recognize and honour the many individuals who donate their time, energy, and skills to their community because they have a sincere desire to make a difference.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the great Volunteers at TBRHSC and the Health Sciences Foundation for the service they provide patients, visitors, staff and the community.
