Nurses: With You Every Step of the Way
by Communications
Talking about sexual violence and sexual harassment is so unpleasant and uncomfortable, says Melody McGregor, “that we have gone to great lengths to ignore them, understate them, minimize them, and deny them.”
As a Registered Nurse with the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Program at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC), McGregor works to improve access to reporting, health care, justice and recovery for victims of assault.
She has become a growing expert in the field of sexual assault and domestic violence not only for the TBRHSC staff but also in the community at large. She is a member of the Coordinating Committee to End Woman Abuse, the Aboriginal Domestic Violence Committee, and Soroptomists International, a global volunteer organization working to improve the lives of women and girls. She is also the recipient of this year’s TBRHSC Chief Nursing Executive Award.
Each year, as part of National Nursing Week, hospital employees, physicians, students, faculty and patients are invited to nominate nurses from across the organization who have touched the lives of patients, families and peers in a remarkable way and who exemplify the highest standards of quality nursing practice and patient and family centered care at TBRHSC.
Nurses make up the largest group of employees at TBRHSC and National Nursing Week provides an opportunity to recognize the outstanding, compassionate and safe care nurses provide to patients all year long.
Recipients of the Nursing Awards of Excellence demonstrate commitment to patient care, support for co-workers; outstanding clinical skills and knowledge; and evidence-informed practice, all to improve patient care, outcomes, compassion, dignity and respect.
Congratulations to the award recipients!
