Legion Sees Value in Camera

Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 5 has an almost constant presence at the Hospital, with a long history of giving to a variety of departments. Most recently they chose to support the appeal for a new Retinal Imaging Camera in the Lions Vision Care Centre.

Poppy Chairman and Master Corporal (retired), Sharon Scott was proud to present $5,000 towards the Camera. As she says, “Vision care is critical to our community and having access to this camera will allow many people to have care in Thunder Bay as opposed to traveling, which is such a relief.”

This donation supports the previous gifts provided by Royal Canadian Legion – Fort William Polish Veterans Branch 149 and Royal Canadian Legion – Slovak Branch 129 made in the spring of 2016.

The Camera is critical for ongoing patient care and will provide great benefit to patients. Specifically, it allows for faster imaging, with no dilation, contact lenses or pressure on the eye. It also allows Ophthalmologists to view almost double the size of the retina compared to what they can see now.

The Northwest has a higher rate of medical conditions, like diabetes, that contribute to eye problems, so gifts from the Legions, as well as many other donors are extremely important as the Hospital would otherwise  not be able to fund this highly-technical equipment.
