Overcoming Barriers to Cancer Screening

In Northwestern Ontario, there are over 60 Indigenous communities. For certain types of cancer, rates are increasing among the Indigenous population. Research suggests that culturally appropriate screening and education could help detect cancers early.

Level Red (Control) and Essential Care Partners

Our Hospital has moved its internal COVID-19 Pandemic Response Level from Orange (Restrict) to Red (Control). This decision was based on the need to increase response activities and protective measures geared to decreasing transmission of viruses and preserving hospital capacity and staffing as a result of the increased level of COVID-19, influenza and respiratory virus within the community.

World Diabetes Day (November 14)

November 14th is World Diabetes Day and this year’s theme is “Access to Diabetes Care.” For individuals living with diabetes, whether newly diagnosed or experienced in the journey, access to specialized care in Northwestern Ontario is available. There are two large diabetes education centres in Thunder Bay (Centre for Complex Diabetes Care and Diabetes Health), and many clinics have government funded services on site.

Bringing Lab Tests Home for Faster, Safer, Better Patient Care

Laboratory Medicine – the science of analyzing samples in a lab – is one of the most important tools doctors have to help diagnose and treat disease. Blood work is the most common specimen type though urine, stool, saliva, tissue, and other samples also pass through the Laboratory Services department on Level 1 of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Our laboratory conducts 2.7 million of these tests every year including many tests for hospitals across Northwestern Ontario.
