NWO Stroke Care – The Time is NOW: Cross-Continuum Initiatives

The Northwestern Ontario Regional Stroke Network hosted a free educational event titled “NWO Stroke Care-The Time is NOW: Cross-Continuum Initiatives”. This event took place on Tuesday March 22nd at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Center and was offered via videoconferencing and live webcasting throughout Northwestern Ontario. Participants attended virtually from Dryden, Sioux Lookout, Terrace Bay and HAGI Community Services. The target audience was front-line health care providers, administrators and educators from across the stroke continuum of care, as well as health system planners with an interest in stroke prevention and care.

This event was attended by a total of 68 participants with information being provided on quality improvement initiatives from across the stroke continuum of care. Initiatives from the Public Awareness, Prevention (including Primary Care), Hyperacute, Acute, Rehabilitation and Community/Long Term Care sectors were highlighted through eight rapid podium presentations and a panel discussion. Topics included the FAST campaign & work with our Emergency Medical Services partners, Transient Ischemic Attack Triage, Telestroke, Code Stroke, Regional Stroke Unit Care, Rehabilitation Intensity, Tele-SLP and Stroke Survivor Support Groups.

The event met or exceeded the expectations of all those completing the evaluation. Participants had very positive feedback regarding this format, some quotes from the evaluation included:

Loved the short 7-minute presentations. I was engaged and thinking at all times.

Very well organized and cohesive.

We also had the pleasure in hosting Chris O’Callaghan, Executive Director of the Ontario Stroke Network (OSN), the coordinating body for the Ontario Stroke System. Chris commented “It was a pleasure to see highlights of the work going on in Northwestern Ontario in one afternoon – the presenters and their teams are to be commended on their commitment to stroke across the care continuum.”
