Clinical Stroke Nurses – Assisting the Patients in Acute Stroke

The role of the Clinical Stroke Nurse

There are three Clinical Stroke Nurses at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre: (From L-R) Barry Ducharme, Chrissy Johnson, and Shelly Brown.

These Nurses are responsible for providing leadership, coordination, and evaluation of services for stroke patients at the Health Sciences Centre including patient navigation during the acute stroke protocol tPA process.  The Clinical Stroke Nurses participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of the Stroke Clinical Pathway, collaborate with all team members to coordinate care along the stroke continuum, provide education to patients and/or their families and caregivers, and advocate for patients and families throughout their hospital stay.

Barry, Chrissy and Shelly support and enhance the uptake of best practice guidelines in stroke care and serve as resources to various care providers in the acute care setting.  They also promote and contribute to the education and research goals of the Northwestern Ontario Regional Stroke Program. They are a valuable member to the stroke team!
