DESCRIPTION:Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations Webinar Invitation\n\n \nSpasticity – The who\, why\, when and how\n\nDate\nThursday November 15\, 2018\n\nTime\n12:00 – 13:00 EST\n\nPresenter\nTheodore Wein MD\, FRCPC \nAssistant Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery\, McGill University\nStroke Prevention Clinic\, Montreal General Hospital\n \nIntended Audience\nHealthcare providers caring for stroke patients across all settings (acute\, rehabilitation\, prevention\, community)\, system leaders and funders involved in planning and service delivery for people impacted by stroke\, Heart and Stroke staff\, students from across health related disciplines\, and researchers.\n\n\nNote\nThis is an open invitation\, and may be forwarded to interested parties\n\nAbout this presentation\nSpasticity is a common post-stroke condition which can affect the muscles in arms\, legs\, hands and feet. With spasticity\, muscles become stiffer and tight\, with loss of voluntary movement\, increased pain\, and may become continuously contracted without treatment. This leads to a loss in range of motion which may impact the affected person’s ability to perform activities of daily living\, and may require additional caregiver support and effort. Spasticity often leads to frustration and slows recovery because it impacts active participation. Several factors need to be considered when assessing and managing people post stroke who exhibit signs of spasticity. Traditionally\, spasticity is assessed and treated during rehabilitation several days after stroke onset. Current thinking is changing and assessment and treatment should occur earlier in the recovery process.\n\nIn this presentation\, Dr Theodore Wein will review current literature and best practice on assessment and management of spasticity\, including identification of patients who experience spasticity\, how to assess them\, when to treat them and how to treat them\, as well as ongoing management.\n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\nUpon completion of this program participants will be able to:\n1. DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the Northwestern Ontario Regional Stroke Network and the Patient Journey Project Team\, we will be introducing a new stroke resource\, a visual map of “A Stroke Survivor’s Journey in Northwestern Ontario”. \nThe map is also available online\, in both English and French\, at www.nwostroke.ca\, in the Patient and Caregiver area\, under the Stroke Survivor and Caregiver Resources tab. Additionally\, a “Health Care Provider User Guide” has been developed to support health care providers in using the map with their patients and families. \nProject Co-Lead\, Laura Jones\, experienced a stroke in 2014. Laura said “I am proud to have been a part of this project. When I had my stroke\, I found it hard to focus. A map of where I was that showed my stroke journey and the recovery process including what lay ahead would have been useful. DESCRIPTION:To view the archived event from June 6: Click here \nWomen are disproportionately affected by stroke throughout their lives: More women die of stroke than men\, more women are living with the effects of stroke\, they have worse outcomes and they face more challenges as they recover. Yet\, they are confronted with challenges across the health system and often are not adequately supported according to the Heart & Stroke 2018 Stroke Report. \nAccording to the 2018 Stroke Report women face a greater stroke burden and lack support: \n\nStroke is more deadly for women: One-third more women die of stroke than men in Canada.\nMore women are also living with stroke. Of the approximately 405\,000 people in Canada living with the effects of stroke\, 214\,000 are women.\nWomen are 60% less likely to regain their independence\, they make fewer functional gains and they have worse quality of life.\nLess than half of stroke patients who participate in rehabilitation are women.\nWomen are less likely to return home after stroke and twice as many women as men go to long-term care.\nThere is a higher risk of marriage break-up post stroke if it is the woman who has the stroke.\n\nThe way forward \nDifferences between women’s and men’s brain health are just starting to be understood.
