Treating the individual with ataxia can often be a very challenging experience for the clinician. Perhaps this is because we have focused on addressing the clinical symptoms rather than the underlying impairments. She has published more than 70 research articles and obtained over $6 million in funding. Dr. Salbach’s knowledge translation research has focused on exploring the influence of facilitation\, and guideline implementation tools on advancing stroke rehabilitation practice; and the implementation of task-oriented community exercise programs for older adults with balance and mobility limitations. Dr. Salbach has expertise with cluster randomized trials\, process evaluations\, systematic and scoping reviews\, measurement\, and multi-level modeling. She co-chairs the writing group to update the Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations.

DESCRIPTION:Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations Webinar Invitation\n\n \nSpasticity – The who\, why\, when and how\n\nDate\nThursday November 15\, 2018\n\nTime\n12:00 – 13:00 EST\n\nPresenter\nTheodore Wein MD\, FRCPC \nAssistant Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery\, McGill University\nStroke Prevention Clinic\, Montreal General Hospital\n \nIntended Audience\nHealthcare providers caring for stroke patients across all settings (acute\, rehabilitation\, prevention\, community)\, system leaders and funders involved in planning and service delivery for people impacted by stroke\, Heart and Stroke staff\, students from across health related disciplines\, and researchers.\n\n\nNote\nThis is an open invitation\, and may be forwarded to interested parties\n\nAbout this presentation\nSpasticity is a common post-stroke condition which can affect the muscles in arms\, legs\, hands and feet. With spasticity\, muscles become stiffer and tight\, with loss of voluntary movement\, increased pain\, and may become continuously contracted without treatment. This leads to a loss in range of motion which may impact the affected person’s ability to perform activities of daily living\, and may require additional caregiver support and effort. Spasticity often leads to frustration and slows recovery because it impacts active participation. Several factors need to be considered when assessing and managing people post stroke who exhibit signs of spasticity. Traditionally\, spasticity is assessed and treated during rehabilitation several days after stroke onset. Current thinking is changing and assessment and treatment should occur earlier in the recovery process.\n\nIn this presentation\, Dr Theodore Wein will review current literature and best practice on assessment and management of spasticity\, including identification of patients who experience spasticity\, how to assess them\, when to treat them and how to treat them\, as well as ongoing management.\n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\nUpon completion of this program participants will be able to:\n1. Identify spasticity in the stroke population\n2. Recognize that spasticity does occur in the acute setting\n3.
